Account Executive
SmartBrief, Inc is looking for account executives to generate advertising/sponsorship
revenue in e-mail news service publications.
Responsibilities:
- Meet target revenue goals and develop new business through a consultative sales approach.
- Meet with corporate marketing directors and their advertising agencies to develop strategic, online marketing programs for their companies.
- Drive the marketing and revenue strategies for a set of SmartBrief's targeted publications.
- Develop new revenue-generating products/services through substance-driven conversations with prospects and clients.
Required Skills/Experience:
- 2+ years experience in sales of advertising, media, consulting services or knowledge management products.
- Comfortable and confident in selling to senior-level marketing executives and their ad agencies.

Client Services Manager
As part of SmartBrief's Advertising Operations team, the Client Services Manager works to ensure the success of each client advertising campaign in SmartBrief and has the lead responsibility for managing the post-sale relationship with the advertising client. S/he provides day-to-day, front line contact with clients to ensure superior service and campaign satisfaction. The Client Services Manager collaborates with the sales department to anticipate client needs, innovate, and problem solve. This position allows for flex-time and telecommuting arrangements.
Skills and Requirements:
- 5+ years of related work experience. Online advertising/ media company or creative agency/publicity firm background strongly preferred.
- 2+ years of writing/copyedit experience preferred.
- Strong academic achievement including bachelor's degree in related discipline.
- A strong sense of organization with strict attention to detail.
- An extraordinary customer service ethic with a strong business acumen.
- Technical savvy.
- Demonstrated flexibility to manage multiple tasks, solve problems and schedule work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Senior Front End Developer
SmartBrief is looking for a Senior Front End Developer to lead a comprehensive program to improve interfaces and user experience across all user-facing projects, and manage a team of designers and web developers.
Core Requirements:
- Mastery of valid HTML/XHTML and efficient use of tableless structure.
- UI expertise with the ability to persuasively communicate it to information architects, visual designers, back-end developers, quality assurance, customer service, product managers and business users.
- JavaScript.Must be absolutely comfortable (or good at faking it) juggling frameworks or hand-coding without one. Please be able to discuss at least two of the following: jQuery, Dojo, MooTools, Ext, YUI, Prototype and your own JavaScript libraries.
- Comprehensive knowledge of data exchange and manipulation technologies. XML, XSLT, XML Schemas, XPath, JSON and other data exchange and manipulation technologies. Back-end experience with Java, SQL, etc. a plus.
- Willful personality. Must be able and willing to determine, convince and set coding standards, pick frameworks, train colleagues, run code reviews, understand business objectives, and explain technical concepts to business decisions-makers.
- Argumentative and opinionated. A thorough and academic understanding of web usability and UI best practices, as well as a desire to spread the manna of good design throughout the company.
Experience:
- 5+ years professional web development (including dynamic database driven sites - e-commerce experience a plus).
- Translating comps and wireframes into flexible and usable code templates.
- Hiring and management of staff.
- Rapid prototyping of new products and features, knowing full well that it's just a lark.
- Developing processes and methodologies to deliver quality work.
- Working closely with "people" who'll change specifications in mid-project. Not strangling them. Delivering a finished product that exceeds their expectations.
- Managing contract employees and/or short term consultants.
Submittal Requirements:
- A description of your most recent work. Please describe, in detail and at length, the methodologies, sources, guidelines, and tactics you employed to improve the project. Please provide a description of the actual result and how many of your ideas were implemented. If the project has not yet been completed, please provide alternate imaginary histories of it both with your involvement and without it.
- Name at least five of your favorite sites. Please be ready to discuss what UI, design, and content elements you think make them work so well.
- Provide at least five things in your areas of expertise (related to this job or not) that you feel most passionately about. Please be ready to discuss or fake your expertise on the subject.
- Five improvements to the SmartBrief site that could each be implemented in a week or less.

Taxonomy Engineer
SmartBrief is looking for a Washington, DC-based Taxonomy Engineer with experience in building and maintaining information taxonomies in online environments. Experience in web-based news aggregation environments preferred but not required.
Duties will include creating and modifying industry taxonomies for SmartBrief editorial team, creating processes for the effective building and extending of taxonomies. The ideal applicant will have excellent knowledge of knowledge management, Boolean search, and the ability to optimize based on precision and recall scores.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Creation of new taxonomies based on sample data and interviews.
- Collaboration with both Editorial and Technology teams.
- Creation and management of taxonomy error detection/system improvements.
- Ability to meet frequent deadlines.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Desired candidate attributes include:
- Expert knowledge of keyword search techniques, including Boolean operators.
- Expert knowledge of taxonomy best practices.
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong work ethic and interpersonal skills.
- Bachelor's degree and 1-3 years of working experience.
- Ability to learn and work independently.
