Are acceptable training results acceptable?

SmartPulse — our weekly reader poll in Smartbrief on Workforce — tracks feedback from leading managers and HR practitioners. We run the poll question each Wednesday in our e-newsletter.

Last week, we asked: How would you rank the effectiveness of your organization’s training program?

  • It’s acceptable — people get the information they need to do their jobs, 47%
  • What training program? We’re sink or swim, 35%
  • It’s awesome — we take training very seriously, 18%

Now I’m not the biggest fan of across the board training programs (for some companies, it proves to be a waste of money), but having just an okay training program does seem problematic. I’m willing to look past a sink or swim mentality as simply a divestment in training, but if your company is spending money and staff of training and you aren’t getting great results? Improve it or ditch it.
