Brooke blogs “The Office”: Gossip is hard on your career

After a long summer with nothing to watch but reruns and reality shows, new episodes of everyone’s favorite shows are returning, including one of mine — “The Office.” We now know that Pam is definitely pregnant and Dunder Mifflin is as bad a work environment for summer interns as it is for its regular employees.

As ridiculous as Michael Scott and his ragtag group of employees are, their adventures hit on a slew of serious office issues. With that in mind, I’m going to be blogging about the show this season and asking SmartBlog on Workforce readers to weigh in on the issues that arise.

The season premier focused on the issue of office gossip. Michael — not surprisingly — learns that he is out of the loop and decides the best way to get in is to start spreading gossip himself. Unfortunately, the gossip he gets from the office interns is serious stuff — Stanley was making out with a woman who’s not his wife at a local club.

So Michael spreads the rumor, then realizes it was a bad idea and asks: “How do you untell something?”

His answer — and the only answer: “You can’t. You can’t put words back into your mouth.”

With the show revolving around his shenanigans, Michael’s job is safe, but yours likely isn’t. That’s why staying out of gossip is the best plan in the office, especially when the information you’re spreading has absolutely nothing to do with work.
