Companies aren’t really recruiting from competitors?

SmartPulse — our weekly reader poll in Smartbrief on Workforce — tracks feedback from leading managers and HR practitioners. We run the poll question each Wednesday in our e-newsletter.

Last week, we asked: Do you try to recruit from competitors?

  • No — if they come through our normal channels, that’s fine, 64%
  • Yes — but through more indirect channels, 21%
  • Yes — we target them directly, 12%
  • No — we actively avoid hiring from competitors, 3%

I’m a little shocked by the result of this week’s poll. Nearly two-thirds say they don’t actively recruit from competitors, yet what I hear from HR folks is that this is a trend that hasn’t disappeared based on their own employees’ feedback. I’ve engaged in direct recruitment of competitor’s employees and admittedly have had mixed results but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth the effort of trying when appropriate.
