Today’s thriving companies have leaders at the top who possess an insatiable thirst for learning and a unique capacity for listening, said Aron Cramer, CEO of Business for Social Responsibility. In addition, businesses need to be in tune with society’s needs and willing to adapt and to change to meet them.

“Only focusing on what Wall Street says and what Wall Street thinks is important for the next quarter won’t get it done because … if the public doesn’t accept the way companies interact with consumers, with communities and so on, no business can succeed,” he said.

One way that businesses can become a “relentless” learner is to start from the inside. Create a company culture with employees who understand the value of what customers think and what they need.

“When a CEO can have all his or her people understand those things, then you’ve got a company that is aligned in a way that is going to make them maximally successful,” Cramer said.
