Restaurant and Foodservice

Every week, Restaurant SmartBrief editors scour the Internet for the breaking news and best-practices stories that restaurant owners and managers need to make their businesses smarter. However, every week, hundreds of fascinating food, beverage and restaurant stories don’t make the cut. Here are a few of my favorite stories from the past week that didn’t make the newsletter:

  • Women are starting to appear in the top ranks of the restaurant industry, according to this article. Chef Anita Lo of annisa says, “There are women with big names who are struggling to get the funds to open a restaurant, while you have men with lesser names who now have restaurants in Vegas. What’s that about?”
  • Three-fifths of Britons said they eat dinner while in front of a computer, according to this study. ”Millions of British people cannot tear themselves away from the Internet, even for dinner. The growth of the PC dinner is a remarkable new trend and for many across the nation, has now replaced the traditional TV dinner,” said a platform controller for an online viewing service.
  • The ZagatBuzz New York City presented its favorite seasonal and limited-time quickservice items, including McDonald’s Shamrock Shake.  Also on the list: the Burger King Brussels Sprout Whopper in the U.K., Papa Murphy’s heart-shaped pizza and KFC’s Fish Snacker for the Lenten season.
  • Charlie Sheen is now sharing his #winning recipes. This video reveals a few new catchphrases, including “My hands are rated by Zagats” and “I don’t cook food. I will it.”
