Last week, we asked: Do you give rewards for safety performance?
- No, 62%
- Yes, 38%
I am a strong believer in not having rewards for safety performance. Most people want to be safe and simply giving them a token reward isn’t going to help them go out of their way to be more safe. Likewise, giving a large reward guarantees coverups (especially of minor issues that can lead to bigger issues). The most effective method is a combination of training, open reporting, process improvement and corrective action all based around safety.
