Restaurant and chef awards, best beer towns and goat meat

Every week, Restaurant SmartBrief editors scour the Internet for the breaking news and best-practices stories that restaurant owners and managers need to make their businesses smarter. However, every week, hundreds of fascinating food, beverage and restaurant stories don’t make the cut. Here are a few of my favorite stories from the past week that didn’t make the newsletter:

  • James Beard has announced its semifinalists for 2011 restaurant and chef awards. The winners will be revealed in May.
  • Voting for this year’s People’s Best New Chef from Food & Wine magazine is going on. Check out chef bios and menus from 10 regions. Voting ends at the beginning of March.
  • Esquire tracked down the top seven beer cities in the U.S., and this slide show reveals the bars and restaurants where the craft brews are on the menu.
  • Goat meat is gaining some American fans. Here’s a primer on preparations from Italy, Greece, Iraq and five other countries.
