The fate of the federal GMO bill was the most popular story amongst SmartBrief readers this past week, with news about big companies like Coca-Cola, Pinnacle Foods and Wal-Mart rounding out the top four stories for the week.

On the GMO story, the federal bill on GMO labeling fell short of reaching the Senate and industry groups chimed in.

“Despite today’s vote, there continues to be a strong bipartisan consensus to protect American consumers from the increased food costs and confusion of a 50-state patchwork of labeling laws,” said GMA President and CEO Pamela Bailey. “GMA is committed to rolling up our sleeves to work with Chairman Roberts and Senator Stabenow so that the Senate can enact a bipartisan solution in the near future.”

Another hot news item — since Coca-Cola’s Venturing and Emerging Brands unit began investing in startups such as Honest Tea and Suja Juice, the company has reconsidered its marketing and distribution strategies.

And, another major food manufacturer announced new two new lines of Wish-Bone salad dressing last month with new packaging intended to lend a fresh, handmade look. The E.V.O.O. line features a smaller die-cut label to highlight its contents and a white background to indicate purity, while the Ristorante Italiano line uses graphics emphasizing ingredients such as Parmesan cheese and roasted garlic, said John Nunziato, chief creative officer for design company Little Big Brands.

Wal-Mart’s news on an Indiana milk processing plant also captured the attention of readers, as did marketing stories associated with two big names: Buffalo Wild Wings and Chobani.
