H.E. Butt ranked first in a survey rating the country’s most-trusted food retailers, and that story ranked first with SmartBrief’s food and beverage readers this week. Kroger, Publix and ShopRite came next on the list, in the study from Winsight Grocery Business, while Walmart was named the most-shopped food store.

News about Walmart took several spots on this week’s most-read list. Walmart, Kroger, Target, Amazon and Costco took the top five spots on Kantar’s 2019 US PoweRanking list. This list is based on evaluations by the brands that are the retailers’ trading partners, and in turn the retailers rank the brands.

And a story about Walmart’s plans to revamp its fresh fruit and vegetable department under the Produce 2.0 initiative also made the list. The stores’ produce departments will boast wider aisles, shorter bins and a separate organic section.

A couple of CPG stories resonated with readers this week, including news that General Mills would partner with Nielsen to study consumer trends and preferences. Chobani’s planned January launch of oat-based nondairy products also made the list.

Among restaurant news, this week’s most-read story was about Landry’s owner Tilman Fertitta’s offer to buy Houlihan’s for $40 million, after the restaurant operator filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Chef Dominique Crenn’s move to remove meat from the menu at her restaurants also drew attention.
