Over the past months, education has mainly been conducted online out of necessity. Students who typically receive in-person instruction in a classroom environment have had to adapt quickly to technology as the main delivery system for curriculum. Additionally, parents have been forced into a larger supervisory role with their children’s educations. How can a high-quality education, based on technology as delivery, be achieved?
Web resources for remote learning
When using web-based resources from a home learning environment it is important to find those which not only specialize in producing real-world experiences for students, but also provide teachers/parents with additional enrichment activities needed to reach the whole child using multiple learning styles.
Web-based resources can help bridge the gap between interactive technology and student engagement. Many technology-rich classrooms use these resources to promote collaboration and active learning as students participate in different video experiences. These tools can also foster critical thinking skills as they’re incorporated into homework assignments.
The Flipped Classroom Model
The flipped classroom model is a perfect example of how to integrate web resources into your instruction.
Let’s say you want your students to watch a 30-minute video clip on how a weather forecast is created and follow-up with a discussion or collaboration. Instead of using your class time together to view the video, have the students watch the video independently, then focus the time you have together to discuss the main ideas. This not nurtures meaningful dialog but it helps personalize the learning experience by giving students control over the pace, path and place for learning.

Web-based video resources allow us to implement the four key components of learning: active engagement and collaboration, participation, frequent interaction and feedback, and connections with real world experts. These resources can also be a vital tool for developing modified lessons for the diverse group of learners that will benefit from personalized learning in centers and small groups.
Long gone are the days of teachers standing and talking for hours on end as students sit with blank stares in rows of desks. Students should oversee their own learning while teachers and parents serves as facilitators, or tour guides, on the path of student learning. By developing these skills as an educator or parent and introducing your students to new learning technologies, you will be on the forefront of teaching and learning.
